correction of gypsum block readings due to salinity effects for soil moisture content measurements
Authors
abstract
abstract irrigation planning and management requires continious monitoring and measurements of soil moisture content. application of gypsum blockes (gb) are common in soil moisture measurements. gb readings are subjected to its geometry and soil solution concentration. this study was carried on 90 gb in research greenhouse of faculty agricultural, ferdowsi university of mashhad. at the begining, all gb were calibrated in distilled water. further, readings were collected in four solutions of 2, 6, 10 and 18 ds/m salinity. then, three soil media with different textures (sandy loam, loam, clay loam) at 5 levels of salinity rate (trace, 2, 6, 10 and 18 ds/m of saturated extract) were studied, as 15 treatments. gb readings, at different soil moisture contant, were made by ele-5910a. for each treatment, readings vs. soil moistures were plotted. these curves were compared with that of standard (same soil texture with trace salinity). finally, some corrector functions were developed to eliminate the salinity effects from gb readings.

Investigating the Effect of Soil Organic Matter on Gypsum Block Calibration for Measuring Soil Volumetric Moisture Content
Continuous soil moisture assessment and evaluation is essential for irrigation management and planning. One of the common methods for measuring the moisture content of the soil is the use of a gypsum block. The use of gypsum blocks in some cases, including the presence of organic matter in soil, may cause an error in the measurement of moisture. For this purpose, a laboratory study was conducte...
full textA Novel Bias Correction Method for Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Soil Moisture: Retrieval Ensembles
Bias correction is a very important pre-processing step in satellite data assimilation analysis, as data assimilation itself cannot circumvent satellite biases. We introduce a retrieval algorithm-specific and spatially heterogeneous Instantaneous Field of View (IFOV) bias correction method for Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) soil moisture. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first...
full textSoil Moisture Content
The assessment of soil moisture content and surface roughness from remotely sensed data is of primary importance for improving agricultural techniques of conservation farming such as yield forecasts, scheduling irrigations, fertilization. SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) remotely sensed data may provide a powerful tool for indirectly retrieving these agricultural surface parameters over large are...
full textdevelopment of mini-gypsum blocks for soil moisture measurement and their calibration to compensate for temperature
to measure soil water content (or soil matric suction) in thin layers of about 30mm, conventional gypsum blocks are not suitable. to carry out the task, mini-gypsum blocks were constructed using plaster of paris in an innovative fashion. a power relationship was found between the soil water content and the mini-gypsum blocks’ readings in kω. the calibration results showed that readings of m...
full textPassive active L- and S-band (PALS) microwave sensor for ocean salinity and soil moisture measurements
A passive/active L/S-band (PALS) microwave aircraft instrument to measure ocean salinity and soil moisture has been built and tested. Because the L-band brightness temperatures associated with salinity changes are expected to be small, it was necessary to build a very sensitive and stable system. This new instrument has dual-frequency, dual polarization radiometer and radar sensors. The antenna...
full textMicrostrip ring resonator for soil moisture measurements
Accurate determination of spatial soil moisture distribution and monitoring its temporal variation have a significant impact on the outcomes of hydrologic, ecologic, and climatic models. Development of a successful remote sensing instrument for soil moisture relies on the accurate knowledge of the soil dielectric constant ( soil) to its moisture content. Two existing methods for measurement of ...
